
Picking the Right IR Lamps for Your MHM Press
When your IR lamps finally burn out on an MHM press, you’re usually stuck with a choice: pay the “OEM tax” for original parts or find a replacement that actually does the job without costing a fortune. The goal is simple. You want your shirts to cure exactly the way they did before. To get that, you can’t just buy any bulb; you need something that hits the same heat profile as the Roland system. The nitty-gritty on power Here’s the thing: heat density is everything. If you plug in a lamp with the wrong wattage or voltage, your curing times are going to be all over the place. We build our replacements to match the exact Ohm ratings of the Roland units. Why? Because it keeps your power controllers happy. If you try to force too much wattage into a space that isn’t built for it, you aren’t just risking a blown fuse—you could actually melt your reflector housings. Not a great look. Quartz and coatings (The “Secret Sauce”) Most of these dryers use short-wave infrared halogen tubes. We use high-purity quartz because it can take the thermal shock without cracking. But you also have to think about your ink. Whether you’re running plastisol or water-based, the coating on the tube matters. A coated lamp pushes the heat deeper into the fabric. It’s the difference between a shirt that’s cured all the way through and one where the surface is scorched but the ink underneath is still wet. Fit and finish There is nothing more frustrating than a part that almost fits. We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors so you can just wire them in and get back to work. No hacking the loom. The length has to be spot on, too. If a lamp is off by even 2mm, it puts pressure on the glass. Once the machine starts vibrating during a run, that pressure leads to cracks. One last tip: these high-wattage lamps get hot. Fast. If you’ve sped up your belt or added extra lamps to the line, double-check your exhaust fans. You need to move that ambient heat out of the shop, or you’ll risk warping the actual frame of your machine.
