
Getting the Most Out of Carbon Infrared Heaters
Most people are used to standard nichrome wire lamps, but carbon heaters are a different beast entirely. We wrap a carbon fiber filament inside a quartz envelope. The magic here is that it doesn’t need to get nearly as hot to throw out a massive amount of infrared energy. Instead of wasting energy heating up all the air in the room, the heat goes straight into your workpiece. It’s efficient. It’s direct. The Nitty-Gritty on Power When you’re picking out a heater, your voltage and wattage are what really drive the heat flux. If you cram high wattage into a short tube, you get an intense blast of heat. This is exactly what you want for things like PET blowing or plastic welding where speed is everything. If you go with a high-voltage tube, you’ll pull less current. That means you can use thinner wiring throughout your machine, which saves a lot of headache during the build. One quick warning: these high-density tubes are picky about their reflectors. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, you’re basically throwing away the efficiency that makes carbon filaments worth it in the first place. Keep them clean. Building These Things to Last We use quartz glass for the envelope because it can take the hit. When you’re cycling heat on and off rapidly, cheaper glass cracks. Quartz doesn’t. Depending on your material, you might need the heat to hit the surface or soak deep into the substrate. We can add a coating to shift the wavelength from shortwave to medium-wave to make that happen. As for the wiring, we stick with R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re basically plug-and-play with standard industrial sockets. You won’t have to tear apart your entire heating bank just to get these installed. Real-World Tips The best part? The warm-up time is almost non-existent. You aren’t standing around for twenty minutes waiting for the system to stabilize. You just turn it on and get to work. But here’s the catch: carbon filaments hate vibration. If your machinery shakes or rattles, those filaments can burn out way too early. If that sounds like your shop, just use some vibration-dampening clips to keep the tubes steady. It’s a small detail, but it’ll save you from a lot of downtime.
