Let’s talk about Carbon Fiber IR Heaters
If you’re used to standard quartz halogen tubes, carbon fiber infrared lamps are a different beast entirely. Instead of a metal coil, we tuck a carbon fiber filament inside a quartz envelope. The result? You get short-wave radiation that hits hard and fast. It’s perfect for those moments when you need to get heat deep into a material without scorching the surface.
The power side of things
Wattage and voltage are what really drive the heat density here. When you go for a high-wattage unit, you’re basically packing more energy into every square centimeter. These things heat up in seconds. It’s almost instant. But here is the catch: your power supply needs to be ready for that initial “kick”—the inrush current. If you’re setting up a big array of these, make sure your control panel can handle the total load. Otherwise, you’ll be spending your morning resetting tripped breakers.
The build and the “fit”
The quartz sleeve isn’t just for show; it keeps the carbon filament from oxidizing and burning out. Depending on what you’re heating—like certain plastics—we can add coatings to help the material absorb the heat better. Then there are the connectors, usually R7s or SK15. Think of these as more than just plugs. They have to breathe. As things get hot, materials expand. If the fit is too tight, that expanding glass will just crack. Too loose? You’ll get arcing at the terminals, and that’s a problem you don’t want.
Real-world use (and the trade-offs)
You’ll mostly find these in PET blowing, paint curing, or drying lines. The big win here is the response time. With an SCR controller, you can dial the heat up or down on the fly. But it’s not all perfect. Carbon fiber is a bit more fragile than a chunky metal coil. It doesn’t love being shaken. If your machinery has a lot of chassis vibration, you’ve got to isolate the lamp mounts. If you don’t, those filaments will snap way sooner than they should.
